I’m not much for politics but I do engage in conversations
now and again with people I know fairly well. I like to be able to ask a
question without ridicule. SO, as I read Friedman’s article, I focused on
paragraphs six and seven. My parents were factory workers but valued education
and gave up a lot so I and my siblings could attend college. My folks didn’t
cry, “poor-mouth” because we didn’t drive a BMW, we were happy to have a car.
Period. We had a practical lifestyle; a home, food, and love.
If I’m getting Friedmans’ gist, I think taking care of
ourselves is a purposeful and necessary duty. As a country, we should be taking
care of business at home, too. Our country seems to have a firm grasp on space
exploration which should continue for strategic planning. I fear the countries,
with nuclear arms, that do not favor the U.S. and believe they should be our
nation’s main focus at this time.
I value your opinion. Where do you think education needs to be placed on the list of America's priorities?
ReplyDeleteHi LaTonya. Thanks for the question. Education needs to be at the top. Without it we, as a nation, have nothing.
DeleteAlthough, one conundrum that I have yet to figure out is why hasn't anyone (and I've read many articles from very intelligent educators that could fill this void) stepped up and supported education so that the politicians get some real facts about what educators do and how the job is conducted. I have yet to witness any form of voice for education from educators, and we keep getting the shaft. The disregard for our profession is shameful. We work our fingers to the bone for meager pay and they indirectly let us know how expendable we are, time after time.
Exasperating!
So when you state that the countries that have nuclear arms should be our greatest focus right now, do you mean over education or do you mean in building the "new Sputnik" for our students?
ReplyDeleteTheresa,
DeleteSorry for the ambiguity. What I was trying to say is that America flaunts it's wealth and with that go billions of dollars to make good on the flaunting. That tactic hasn't gotten us far. We now owe more money than we have.
I think we need to take care of our nation first and foremost, education is part of that thought and/or focus. We need education to be on the cutting edge so we, as a nation can stay on the cutting edge as well.
Building a new 'Sputnik' will progress on it's own volution and reflects the reverberations of our governments choices.
We desperately need a strong, intelligent voice in government to speak about and suport education so we can stay well ahead in the nuclear arms race, space race, and so on.
